Reinbeck council approves daycare funding request

REINBECK – Amidst a crowd of over 50 people who packed into City Hall on Monday night, the Reinbeck City Council approved a $180,000 funding request for the Little Rebels Learning Center, an issue that’s become somewhat contentious over the last several weeks.
Since February, the Little Rebels Learning Center has been full to capacity, says Robin Moore, director of the daycare portion of the center.
“Right now, we have a waiting list of 21 kids,” Moore said. “We’ve had to start turning families away.”

Cycle safe: Bike safety event educates local youth about proper bike precautions

GRUNDY CENTER – Last Thursday, throngs of kids sporting helmets and knee pads flocked to the Landmark Bistro on their bikes for the first ever “Kids Bike Night” event.
There, they had the chance to participate in all manor of fun – from bike decorating, to coloring, to helmet fittings and more.
Grundy County Public Health educator Katie Thornton-Lang was there to provide safety tips to local kids and their parents.
“Helmets are the most important and effective way to keep safe on a bike,” Thornton-Lang says. “But, they’re also things we don’t always think of.”

Better ugly than good: penalty kick propels Rebels past Cadets in regional semis

Friday night’s girl’s Class 1A regional semifinal matchup between Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck and Iowa Falls-Alden could easily be characterized as a slobberknocker or a schoolyard brawl: yellow cards were everywhere, injury timeouts were aplenty and fans of the opposing teams even exchanged words with each other. In the end, however, it was a single penalty kick that made the difference as Rebel junior Maddie McMartin scored midway through the second half to lift her team to a 1-0 upset win and a berth in the regional finals against Nevada.

Spartans just miss top-3 at state after Saturday surge

MARSHALLTOWN – Though the Grundy Center boys’ golf team fell short of a team goal at the Class 1A state golf meet last weekend, there were many signs that the future remains bright for Spartans golf.
Grundy Center shot 21 strokes better than their 336 total on Friday, but ultimately could not catch third-place Winfield-Mt. Union, sitting outside the top three by two strokes with a 651 two-day total at the end of Saturday at American Legion Memorial Golf Course in Marshalltown.
