Heitland strikes gold at state track meet

DES MOINES — AGWSR’s Austin Heitland entered last week’s state track and field meet with great expectations and left with even greater memories. The senior placed in three events, including a championship in the 400-meter dash, while also running a leg of a placing relay.
“It feels really good to come out here and place in four events and be a champion in one,” he said after running his final event Saturday. “I wanted to place in all four, and I wanted to win the 400.”

Stoakes makes G-R history

DES MOINES – Unlike most of the spring track season, it was perfect weather for the Iowa High School Track and Field meet at Drake Stadium May 22-24. But for more reasons than just the weather, Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys’ track coach Andy McQuillen couldn’t say enough about the great experience this year’s Rebel team had at the state meet.
“We had a great weekend at Drake Stadium,” Coach McQuillen said. “From Eric Stoakes capturing the state title in the 400-meter low hurdles to the 4 x 800 team getting fifth place from the slow heat, it was an awesome weekend for G-R track.”

Spartans return to State Golf Meet

OSKALOOSA – Grundy Center boys' golf coach Dennis Dirks has said all season that he felt his team had the potential to do something special this year. Thursday the Spartans took a major step toward doing just that, besting a talent-laden field to earn the district championship at Oskaloosa.
Dirks credited the Spartans' championship to preparation, noting that the team had played the previously-unfamiliar Oskaloosa Golf Course several times since learning it would be the site for districts.
“We've had the 22nd of May circled on the calendar for three months,” Dirks said.
