Lois V. Stephan, 76, of Reinbeck passed away November 1, 2013, at Covenant Medical Center. Visitation was held on November 4 at the French-Hand Funeral Home in Reinbeck. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on November 5 at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, Reinbeck. Burial followed the funeral mass at the Reinbeck Cemetery.  Memorials may be directed to family. One year later, Grundy Center man to complete NY dream

GRUNDY CENTER – One of the more visible victims of Hurricane Sandy one year ago was the first-ever cancellation of the New York City Marathon. Thousands of runners who had worked weeks upon weeks to prepare for the run through New York’s boroughs suddenly found themselves with nowhere to run.
    One among those thousands was Grundy Center’s Larry Cole, who had planned a family vacation around his participation in the event.

Donation comes at crucial time for Grundy County Food Pantry

GRUNDY CENTER -- Each year around the holidays, local food banks receive an influx of donations. The donations are needed at the time due to special holiday projects. But there is also a need at other times of year.

Wittmack brings message of hope, encouragement

GRUNDY CENTER — World explorer Charlie Wittmack talked about perseverance and hope during a trio of local speeches last week.
    The only man to attempt the World Triathlon talked about creating the event and his trials and tribulations while attempting to complete it during a public speech before roughly 100 people Tuesday night. He talked of becoming the first Iowan to climb Mt. Everest and also spoke of taking a group of cancer survivors to the Mt. Everest base camp.

Supervisors approve plan to rebuild Holland bridge

GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy County Board of Supervisors have approved plans to rebuild a bridge in Holland.
    During Monday’s regular meeting, County Engineer Gary Mauer said letting for the project will be held in January or February, 2014, with construction to begin later in the year. The estimated cost of the replacement is $350,000, 80 percent of which will come from federal funds, 10 percent from the city and 10 percent from the county. Mauer said the replacement will lead to a detour along Highway D-35.

GC holiday tree, light events team up Nov. 23

    GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy Center Chamber of Commerce’s Village of Lights and Festival of Trees Committees have teamed up to create a single larger event Nov. 22-24.
