Making spirits bright: Home Care Assistance, Natural Grind team up to help seniors

The holidays are a time for joy, celebration and giving, but for some senior citizens, they’re a painful reminder of the struggles they can face to make ends meet.

Against that backdrop, Home Care Assistance (HCA) of the Cedar Valley has teamed up with the Natural Grind in Grundy Center to create “Operation Merry and Bright,” an effort to provide Christmas gifts for area residents in need. HCA Care Manager Sara Wegmann sees it as a perfect opportunity to give back to the community she calls home.

A year later, little progress reported in Johns case

December 1 marked the one-year anniversary of the discovery of the body of Michael Johns, a 28-year-old Grundy Center man, in an apparent homicide between Greene and Charles City in southern Floyd County. A suspect has never been formally charged in connection with his death, and the law enforcement agencies tasked with investigating the case have released almost no information publicly in the months since.

Penning will serve out remainder of term as sheriff

Rick Penning, who is the longest active serving sheriff in the state with 36 years under his belt, will remain in his post until the next election in 2020 after previously announcing that he would retire at the end of 2018.

Penning, a Wellsburg native and current resident of his hometown, cited the transition involved with the radio tower project and the ongoing implementation of a new statewide system for interoperability as the primary reasons for his change of heart.

Coulter named student marshal for ISU College of Design commencement

Derek Coulter, a Beaman native and 2014 BCLUW High School graduate, has been named the Iowa State University College of Design’s student marshal for the upcoming December commencement ceremony.

The marshal is selected on the criteria of grade point average (GPA) and involvement in the school during his or her time there, and Coulter said he jumped at the opportunity when he received the invitation.

“It’s definitely an honor,” he said.

Fresh out of ideas

I don’t get out to movie theaters as much as I used to because, to be quite honest, in the age of Netflix, on demand and streaming until you drop, it rarely feels worth the effort. But in the last month or so, I’ve gone three times, and what have I seen? A remake, a remake and a sequel in a series that’s now at nine or 10 installments altogether.

Young A-P/GC wrestling team shows spark

PARKERSBURG – In the last few years, Brian Benning said he coached an Aplington-Parkersburg wrestling program that was "tougher than snot" in the wrestling room.

But when the wrestlers would take the mat in the main gym, it didn't line up with what he was seeing in practice.

It was a difference that Benning immediately noted when this winter's Aplington-Parkersburg/Grundy Center wrestling team took center stage in Parkersburg last Thursday night.

Quick Rebels zip past Spartans

Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys basketball can't exactly go toe-to-toe with some of Grundy Center's big players in the post.

What the Rebels could do was disrupt the Spartans' half-court offense, with G-R's three experienced guards – Jackson Kiburis, Eli Thede and Tyler Tscherter – wreaking havoc in the passing lanes as G-R got some easy buckets early and hit free throws down the stretch to seal a 52-36 victory against Grundy Center on Friday.

Holland Post Office open again after temporary closure

The Holland Post Office re-opened last Friday after being closed for roughly a week after a problem was discovered at the office.

According to Postal Service spokesperson Kristy Anderson, an employee at the post office noticed some smoke coming out of an outlet, and contacted the fire department. The department responded, and discovered several hot spots around the building.
