Grundy County not included in federal disaster declaration request

All six of the neighboring counties—Butler, Black Hawk, Franklin, Hardin, Marshall and Tama—are included in a request for a federal disaster declaration that Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds recently sent to President Donald Trump. Because it has not met the threshold for damages, however, Grundy County itself is not on the list.

According to Chief Deputy and Emergency Management Coordinator Tim Wolthoff, damages in Grundy County as a result of heavy flooding and snow melting totaled about $20,000, and to qualify for federal aid, damages must add up to around $47,000 per capita. Six roads have been closed as a result of the flooding.

Unlike the neighboring counties, there are no major rivers running through Grundy County, so the flooding—while still noticeable—has not been as dramatic as it has in places like Iowa Falls and Marshalltown along the Iowa River or Waterloo and Cedar Falls with the Cedar. Shortly after the request for a federal declaration was received, President Trump approved it.
