Evans celebrates two decades with Grundy County

If Lori Evans is at work, there’s a good chance she’s communicating with someone. Before she can squeeze in an interview, she’s got to make calls, share data and ensure that the County Social Services (CSS) office at the new annex building is running like a well-oiled machine.

At the most recent board of supervisors meeting, Evans was honored for 20 years of service to the county. A native of Waterloo, she got her start in the field at Child and Family Mental Health Services there and always dreamed of helping children. While her current role isn’t exactly what she envisioned back then, it’s definitely been fulfilling.

“As a young person, I wanted to be a child psychologist, and I’m far from that. So I do book work in the mental health field,” she said.

And with all of the recent changes related to funding for mental health, insurance for low-income Iowans and a heightened national awareness of the issues faced, the work at the county level is becoming more important than ever.
