Supervisors talk Grundy Road, bridge-funding grant

The Grundy County Board of Supervisors discussed the ongoing progress on the Grundy Road paving project and federal funding for a bridge on Zaneta Road during Monday morning’s regular meeting. County Engineer Gary Mauer reported that he plans to hire Clapsaddle-Garber Associates to handle right of way negotiations on the Grundy Road project at a cost of between $65,000 and $70,000, and there are a total of 16 or 17 parcels on each side of the road, which straddles the Grundy-Black Hawk line. “There’s no way my office can handle (right of way negotiations).

BCLUW board approves art trip, discusses class sharing

The BCLUW school board approved an out of state art trip to Omaha, discussed the potential of sharing classes with East Marshall and GMG and took care of routine beginning of the year business during Monday night’s regular meeting. According to trip sponsor and art teacher Cindy Frost, the high school art club’s weekend trip to Omaha would begin on Friday, October 18, and nine students are planning to go. A motion to approve the trip passed unanimously.

Conrad council gets update on housing development

The Conrad city council discussed progress on the upcoming Farmer’s Development housing subdivision on the north side of town during last Thursday night’s regular meeting.

The plans have already been through several edits and revisions, and Mayor Jeff Martin opined that he hopes the city doesn’t bog itself down too much in making constant changes.

“We can’t keep going back and forth forever. We’re starting to over-engineer this thing to a point where we need to move on,” Martin said.

Ray Hinders, 85 died August 23, 2019, at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital, Grundy Center. He leaves his wife of 58 years Mae (Engelkes) Hinders of Holland, daughter Dianne Hinders of Mason City, daughter Cindy (Jay) Freese of Montour, son Randy (Jill) Hinders of Johnston and son David (Missy) Hinders of Acworth, Georgia; grandchildren, Rachel Hinders and Ross Hinders of Johnston and Baylee Hinders and Brooke Hinders of Acworth, Gerogia.

Harlan L. Hempen, 86, of Cedar Falls died September 9, 2019, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo. Graveside services were held September 14 at Lincoln Cemetery near Voorhies followed by an 11:00 a.m. Memorial Service at Grace Reformed Church in Waterloo.

Benjamin P. Buskohl

Benjamin P. Buskohl, age 75, passed away Tuesday, September 3, 2019, at Dove Healthcare in Bloomer, WI. He was born April 24, 1944 in Eldora, IA to Jake and Lois (Slinker) Buskohl. Ben graduated from Grundy Center High School in 1962.

Carrol C. Appel

Carrol Cathrine Appel, 96, of Grundy Center died September 5, 2019, at Grundy County Memorial Hospital of natural causes. Her body was cremated and a private family graveside service, with Pastor Al Polito, was held on September 15 at St. John’s United Church of Christ Cemetery, Haverhill, IA. Memorials may be directed to the family.

PARKERSBURG – The Grundy Center volleyball team won a seven-team round robin at Aplington-Parkersburg High School on Saturday with a perfect 6-0 record.   

The Class 2A No. 8 Spartans defeated Aplington-Parkersburg, Belle Plaine, Nashua-Plainfield, Denver and West Delaware in straight sets and claimed a three-set victory against Wapsie Valley. West Delaware is ranked fourth in Class 4A and Wapsie Valley is sixth in 1A.

PARKERSBURG – Dike-New Hartford has the pieces in place right now to make the big play happen and take opponents out of the game at critical moments.
  
Aplington-Parkersburg doesn't have those big playmakers solidified just yet.
  
But both teams saw steps forward in the 27-7 win for the Wolverines at Ed Thomas Field last Friday night, and both teams will also be looking for ways to improve as non-district play continues in Class 1A.

ELDORA – The Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys cross country team finished second in the team standings at the Pine Lake Invitational at Pine Lake Country Club in Eldora on Thursday, Sept. 6.
  
GC/G-R scored 63 points, finishing 19 points behind team champion South Hardin, which was led by the winning time of 18:14 from Kolby Winter. BCLUW ran 5th with 142 points and Dike-New Hartford was ninth with 220 points.
