BCLUW board denies open enrollment request, approves fundraisers

The BCLUW school board denied two open enrollment out requests and approved the fundraisers for the 2019-2020 school year during a brief meeting on Monday evening at the elementary library.
           
According to Superintendent Ben Petty, both of the open enrollment requests were filed late without good cause, and both are on Individualized Education Plans (IEPs). He added that he believed BCLUW could meet their needs, but he would consider changing his mind down the road if it was determined that the district couldn’t meet the needs of the students.

King hosts near empty town hall in Grundy Center

On the heels of his latest controversial remarks, Republican Congressman Steve King (R-Iowa) hosted a town hall meeting at the Grundy Community Center on Saturday morning, and just one constituent showed up.             Freelance photographer Brenna Norman of Cedar Falls, who was on assignment with Reuters, snapped a picture of the nearly empty room that quickly went viral. Women's league still swinging at Fox Ridge

DIKE – More than a decade ago, Pat Fisher was asked by Fox Ridge Golf Course management to take over the women's golf league.
  
A senior administrative assistant at John Deere, where she's worked for 44 years now, Fisher knew how to work with management to get things done. Since taking the reins, the league enjoyed an initial growth spurt and participation levels have remained high, with the ladies finishing the 2019 season last week.
  

UNI's Flater ready to hone raw talent

CEDAR FALLS – Bryce Flater went from learning his linebacker position with the University of Northern Iowa football team to having to ply his trade in a high-stakes postseason game last season.
 
Entering his redshirt sophomore year at UNI, expectations have changed for the former Grundy Center standout.
 
"I don't think he even thought he'd play last year until he was in the game," UNI head coach Mark Farley said. "This year, he expects to play, he wants to be the starter and he's got to earn it."

Randall Kent “Hubba” Ehmen, 58, of Dike passed away while surrounded by his family, on Sunday, August 11, 2019, at Unity Point Allen Hospital in Waterloo after a short battle with cancer. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, August 16 at the Dike United Methodist Church. Funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 17 at the Dike United Methodist Church.

John "Jack" Beenken

John “Jack” Martin Beenken, age 72, of Parkersburg died Sunday, August 4, 2019, at UnityPoint Health – Allen Hospital in Waterloo, of natural causes. A memorial service for Jack was held August 8 at Hope Reformed Church in Parkersburg, with Pastor Nate Huisman officiating. Family memories were shared by Michelle and Jason Keller. 

GCPD seeks suspect in burglary

The Grundy Center Police Department issued a public statement last week, seeking information on the whereabouts of a man who is suspected in a recent burglary.
 
According to the GCPD, a warrant has been issued for 37-year-old Joshua Ray Sterns of Grundy Center, who is being sought in connection with a burglary in the area.
 
Stearns is described as 5-feet, 3-inches tall and 140 pounds. He is a white male with red hair and hazel eyes.

'No More Honey' to perform at Clocktower concert

Bringing a fresh take on classic rock, Iowa City-based band “No More Honey” will be taking the stage this Thursday afternoon as part of the monthly Rock Around the Clock Tower Car Cruise and Concert series held on the courthouse lawn.
 
A varied mix of musical backgrounds, No More Honey is a five-person band that creates an experience many different audiences will enjoy, which includes their own twists on covers plus original music.
