Grundy Center Park Board takes preventative steps to preserve ash trees.

    GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy Center Park Board has undertaken a preventative treatment plan in its three city parks to ward off the destructive ash borer. 
    The emerald ash borer (Agrilus planipennis) is a tree insect that feeds under the bark of ash trees and damages the ability of the tree to transport water and nutrients. It may kill a tree in as little as two to four years according to information found on the Iowa Tree Pests.com website.

Gas leak leads to Grundy Center school evacuation

GRUNDY CENTER — A mowing incident led to a few tense moments at Grundy Center Middle School-High School last Wednesday.
    According to Superintendent Jerry Schutz, a mowing accident caused a gas leak at the meter on the east side of the school at just after 1 p.m. as students were being dismissed for a regularly-scheduled professional development time. Students were moved away from the building as Grundy Center Police and Fire helped school staff evacuate the building and the gas was turned off. Students were then sent home as scheduled.

Spartans reach semifinal round at Tiger Invitational

CEDAR FALLS – The Class 2A No. 8 Grundy Center volleyball team went 3-2 and made a strong showing against Class 5A No. 4 Cedar Falls and Class 2A No. 6 Dike-New Hartford at the Tiger Invitational Saturday.
The Spartans opened pool play with wins in straight sets over Cedar Rapids Washington (21-11, 21-7) and Aplington-Parkersburg (21-11, 21-13).  

Spartans earn district win over Wapsie Valley

GRUNDY CENTER – The Grundy Center football team moved to 2-0 in district play with a 32-14 win over Wapsie Valley Friday night. Bryce Flater led a strong Spartan running game with 275 yards of rushing and three touchdowns.
Flater’s first scoring run came on the second play of the game when he went 67 yards for a touchdown less than a minute in. Wapsie Valley blocked the PAT attempt and the Spartans took a 6-0 early lead. Just a couple of minutes later Flater went the distance again, this time for a 69-yard scoring run.

Wapsie Valley snaps D-NH conference winning streak

    DIKE — Wapsie Valley snapped Dike-New Hartford’s 34-match North Iowa Cedar League East Division winning streak last Tuesday with a marathon five-set victory over the Wolverines at Fairbank.
    D-NH rebounded Saturday, winning the extremely-competitive Cedar Falls Tournament for the fourth consecutive year. Nine of the tournament’s 16 teams entered Saturday play ranked in the top 15 of their respective class.

Wolverines stay perfect with 35-7 win over Hudson

DIKE – Dike-New Hartford dominated early in their home game against Hudson Friday night, scoring three first quarter touchdowns while holding the line on defense to take an 18-0 lead after the first 12 minutes of play. The Pirate offense also threatened to score early, but was turned back by the Wolverine defense on four different opportunities from the two-yard line.

GC-GR girls fourth, boys fifth at Spartan Invite

GRUNDY CENTER – The GC/GR girls ran to a fourth place team finish and the boys went fifth at the 17th running of the Spartan Invitational at Town & Country Golf Course Thursday. Denver won the girls’ team title and East Marshall claimed the boys’ title.
Mellina Wrage and Lily Ehlers both earned top 10 finishes for the Spartan girls, going ninth and 10th individually. Cora Saak medaled with her 18th place finish, and Tiana Saak went 26th. Jori Steenhoek completed the Spartan girls’ team score with a 44th place showing.

Ferne Marion Wiarda

Ferne Marion Wiarda, 89, of Grundy Center passed away September 24, 2015, at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Unit in Grundy Center while under the care of Unity Point Hospice. A funeral service was held September 28 at the United Methodist Church in Grundy Center with Pastor Phil Dicks officiating. Visitation was held on September 27 at the Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center. Burial followed the funeral service at the Rosehill Cemetery in Grundy Center.
