Grundy Center girls golf qualifies for state

LYNNVILLE – The Grundy Center girls golf team has made good on a goal set in the off-season.
  
Returning everyone from last season's varsity squad, the Spartans won a regional final at Diamond Trail Golf Club in Lynnville on Monday to punch their ticket to the 1A state tournament at American Legion Memorial Golf Course in Marshalltown next Tuesday and Wednesday.
  
Grundy Center and Iowa Valley advanced from this region, with the Spartans scoring 394 to best Iowa Valley's 402. BCLUW missed out on a team spot with a 422 in third place.

NEW HARTFORD - As June rolls around, the community is gearing up to kick off another busy spring and summer festival season. The first big event of the year will be the annual Beaver Creek Days festival in New Hartford, which will be held from May 31 to June 1 this year.
Lori Palmersheim, who’s in charge of organizing the event, says she’d like to invite everyone out for another year of family-friendly fun for all ages - with plenty of longtime favorite activities as well as new features planned for this year’s festival.

Reinbeck couple charged with burglary, vehicle theft

A Reinbeck couple was arrested in Grundy County last weekend after allegedly stealing a truck from Cedar Rapids and attempting to break in to a rural residence near Dike.
           
Adam Rees, 36, and his wife Ashley, 32, have each been charged with Second Degree Theft and Third Degree Burglary, both Class D felonies. Chief Deputy Tim Wolthoff apprehended them on the morning of Sunday, May 12, upon arriving at a home on 160th Street about two miles west of Dike.
           

Class 1A boys notebook: Grames, Garber just getting started (PHOTOS)

DES MOINES – Grundy Center's Will Grames earned his first medal of the 2019 state track and field meet on Thursday and has lined himself up for a couple more.
  
Grames finished sixth in the 1A boys 400-meter dash in 50.58. That came moments after he qualified for the 100 in a time of 11.13, the third-best time out of the prelims. His 22.31 preliminary time in the 200 is a school record and was the best 200 prelim time in 1A on Thursday.
  

One person hospitalized after three-car crash north of Grundy Center

One person was injured in a three-car crash just outside of Grundy Center on Saturday afternoon.
The crash occurred around 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 4, on Highway 14 approximately two miles north of Grundy Center.
 
According to the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office, a Toyota Prius driven by 45-year-old Daniel Spooner of Sibley was headed northbound on Highway 14 and made a left turn in front of a southbound Toyota Camry driven by 20-year-old Damond Jones of Cedar Falls.
 

Grundy Center golf claims both NICL West titles

Grundy Center golf ended Monday with two NICL West titles and nine all-conference golfers after the girls won the team title in Eldora and the boys won in State Center.
 
The Spartan girls shot a 402 to win the team title by 34 strokes over runner-up BCLUW. AGWSR placed fourth with 479 strokes and Gladbrook-Reinbeck was seventh, shooting a 509.
 

DOT agrees to lower speed limit in downtown GC

With the recent discussions of a DOT-proposed three lane conversion in Grundy Center - and many community members voicing opposition to a conversion - the Grundy Center City Council sent a letter to the DOT to inquire about other options to slow down speed through town, including lowering the speed limit and installing flashing, pedestrian activated beacons at key crosswalks in town.
 

AGWSR's Fisher leads Cougars back to state

NORTHWOOD – AGWSR's Aubrie Fisher is a 16-time state qualifier after punching her ticket to four events at a Class 1A state-qualifying track and field meet at Northwood-Kensett High School on Friday.
  
Fisher heads to state in the 800, 1,500 and 3,000-meter running events, as well as on the anchor leg of the school-record-breaking distance medley relay along with Alyssa Hames, MaKenna Kuper and Ali Gerbracht. Kate Pfaltzgraff added an at-large bid in the 400 hurdles.

Grundy Center, BCLUW, G-R's Skovgard advance in girls golf postseason

GRUNDY CENTER – Treating every hole like a new experience worked out for Lauren Dirks.
 
She delivered the only round below 90 at Town and Country in Grundy Center on Monday, turning in an 87 for medalist honors as the Spartan girls moved on to a Class 1A regional final in Brooklyn next Monday, May 20.
 
"Driving, chipping and putting all worked well," Dirks said. "And just thinking about each hole as a new hole really helped. … The second half I felt like I kept improving and it helped me get to my goal."
