DES MOINES – Grundy Center seniors Brooke Flater, Sarah Lindeman and Hailey Wallis got to run their final race at Drake Stadium in Des Moines in the final event of the day for the girls, joining up with junior Kyah Luhring for an eighth-place finish in the 1A 4x400 relay on Saturday at the state track and field meet.

Lindeman, who had in the past been a state alternate, jumped into the fray this year, making her Blue Oval debut with three freshmen – Bella Dole, Paiton Wallis and Taylor Stahl – in the 4x800 relay on Thursday as that group finished 11th in 10:27.51.

Ciddio, Grames leave with Spartan medals (PHOTOS)

DES MOINES – Will Grames accomplished more in three years with Grundy Center than a lot of track and field athletes accomplish in four seasons.

That doesn't take away the sting of Grames having to say goodbye to his Spartan teammates as he moves out of state this summer.

But the track star added three state medals to his name and the Spartan boys finished with four total medals at the Class 1A state track and field meet at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

G-R's Kuehl represents in high jump

DES MOINES – After a short time away from the sport, Saari Kuehl is back to the high jump as a sophomore at Gladbrook-Reinbeck.

She qualified as the only Rebel representative from either gender at Drake Stadium and made the most of it, earning fourth place in the Class 1A high jump after clearing the bar at 5 feet, 2 inches.

Central Decatur's Emma Atwood cleared 5-4 to win the title. Kuehl cleared 5-2 on her final attempt at that height.

AGWSR's Aubrie Fisher adds 4 medals to storied track career (PHOTOS)

DES MOINES – AGWSR's Aubrie Fisher never got the gold medal she so desperately wanted to earn.

But her four-year career yielded 14 state track and field medals and two state cross country medals, and the Cougar senior and Wartburg commit went 4-for-4 earning state medals for the second year in a row.

Never staying down: BCLUW girls shuttle hurdle wins state title (PHOTOS)

DES MOINES – The BCLUW girls shuttle hurdle team has pushed through its share of adversity over the years, feeling the pain of falling in several key races.

The Comet girls always took it in stride and kept picking themselves back up, and the underclassmen sent out senior Olivia Hughes as a state champion on Saturday afternoon.

The girls made school history with the first girls state title, as Kiersten Kruse, Payton Pekarek, Olivia Hughes and Lizzie Garber won a timed final in 1:07.78.

BCLUW's Garber caps career with hurdles title (PHOTOS)

DES MOINES – Jack Garber set out on his senior season with BCLUW boys track and field wanting a state meet record in the 110 high hurdles to go with a long-awaited gold medal in the marquee hurdling event.

By Saturday afternoon, he admitted that the wear and tear on his body from the past 48 hours of running, combined with a brutal headwind, would put the state record out of reach.

No matter what though, Garber wouldn't accept anything less but a "1" next to his name on the Drake Stadium scoreboard.

Kvale, Jensen medal for D-NH girls (PHOTOS)

DES MOINES – While this year's state experience still wasn't quite what Dike-New Hartford girls track and field were looking for, the Wolverines did bring home some hardware.

Taylor Kvale finished fourth in the 400 hurdles and Alexis Jensen nabbed eighth in the 400-meter run at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

Kvale ran 1:06.87 in the distance hurdling event, not quite up to speed with her qualifying time but running in much worse conditions than the state-qualifying meet with the Blue Oval soaked from Friday rains.

Dike-New Hartford boys track and field wins first state team title (PHOTOS)

DES MOINES – The members of the Dike-New Hartford boys track and field team, even while navigating uncharted waters in pursuit of the team's first-ever state title, acted like they had been there before.

Several of the Wolverines could boast plenty of Drake Stadium experience and competed like they were on a three-day business trip. By Saturday afternoon, they had accomplished everything necessary to bring home a state team title in Class 2A, the first in D-NH school history, and continue an impressive school year for boys athletics.

Lieutenant Governor tours upper story apartments in Conrad

A loft apartment overlooking downtown buildings may be commonly associated with urban living, but the trend is also taking root in some of the state’s smaller communities.

During a stop in Conrad last Wednesday afternoon, Iowa Lieutenant Governor Adam Gregg toured recently renovated upper story apartments on Main Street and praised developer Dan Shine for his investment in rural Iowa.

“I’m glad he’s here and has an interest in developing our small towns, because that’s what we need,” Shine said.
