Wolverine girls win battle of top 10 rivals

    DIKE — The Dike-New Hartford girls’ basketball team took sole possession of first place in the North Iowa Cedar League East Division Tuesday with a 52-47 victory over then-fifith ranked Hudson.
    The Wolverines, ranked No. 8 in Class 2A, were outscored 21-8 in the third quarter to fall behind 45-38 before outscoring the Pirates 14-2 in the final quarter to secure the victory.
    Coach Bruce Dall said the victory is the second of a pair of big wins for his team over the past couple of weeks, also noting how big the team’s victory over Union the week before was.

Spartan girls edge A-P

GRUNDY CENTER – The Spartans girls’ basketball team slipped by with a 31-27 win over Aplington-Parkersburg Friday night.The Spartans (4-4 overall, 1-3 NICL-West) were scheduled to host Gladbrook-Reinbeck on Tuesday, Jan. 7, and West Marshall on Friday, Jan. 10.

AGWSR boys split non-conference games

    CEDAR FALLS – The AGWSR boys’ basketball team returned to the court for two non-conference games this past week, prevailing over Valley Lutheran of Cedar Falls 68-24, after losing a close contest with neighboring Aplington-Parkersburg, 65-56 on Thursday.
    AGWSR (5-3 overall, 2-2 NICL-West) is scheduled to play BCLUW at home on Tuesday, Jan. 7, and South Hardin at Eldora on Friday, Jan. 10.

Grundy boys fall to Falcons

GRUNDY CENTER – The NICL-East prevailed over the NICL-West Friday night when Aplington-Parkersburg handed Grundy Center a 62-39 loss on the Spartans’ home court.
The Spartans (3-5 overall, 3-1 NICL-West) were scheduled to play Gladbrook-Reinbeck on Tuesday, Jan. 7, and West Marshall on Friday, Jan. 10, both in Grundy Center.

Aplington-Parkersburg brought momentum from a win Thursday night with them as they took the court in Grundy Center Friday, and came away with a big 62-39 win over the Spartans.

Crestwood hands D-NH girls first loss

    DIKE — Crestwood matched a season high with seven 3-pointers, most coming at critical teams Saturday, on its way to handing the Dike-New Hartford girls their first loss of the 2013-14 season, 62-49, Saturday in Dike.
    The Cadets (7-1, ranked No. 9 in Class 3A) never trailed after the first quarter while snapping the Wolverines’ seven game winning streak.
    “It just seemed like we were a step slow,” Wolverine coach Bruce Dall said after the game.

Cougar girls suffer 38-33 loss to Falcons

PARKERSBURG – The AGWSR girls’ basketball team lost a close non-conference matchup to Aplington-Parkersburg last Thursday night, in a low-scoring 38-33 contest.
This week AGWSR (3-5 overall, 2-2 NICL-West) was scheduled to play BCLUW at home on Tuesday, Jan. 7, before going on the road to face South Hardin at Eldora on Friday, Jan. 10.

G-R girls even record with pair of wins

REINBECK — The holiday break appears to have served the Gladbrook-Reinbeck girls’ basketball team well. Friday and Saturday the Rebels opened the post-holiday portion of their schedule with back-to-back non-divisional victories, 55-47 over Denver and 55-42 over Don Bosco.
    The wins even G-R’s record at 4-4 as they headed into Tuesday’s NICL West clash against rival Grundy Center. The Rebels return home Friday to play East Marshall.

History was made in 2013

History was made. That would be the easiest way to describe the year in sports for Grundy County high schools. Each school made history in its own special way, from historic accomplishments at the state level to those at the local level.
2013 featured a team standing alone as the best ever in its sport and another possibly on its way to such a feat. It featured a local team dethroning an NICL West basketball power, and another establishing itself once again as the team others hope to dethrone.

Rebel boys rally past Denver, Don Bosco

REINBECK — The Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys’ basketball team picked up right where it left off before Christmas with a pair of non-divisional victories Friday and Saturday, both in come-from-behind fashion.
    The Rebels trailed Denver 31-28 at halftime Friday before rallying to a 63-60 victory, and it trailed Don Bosco 29-26 at halftime Saturday before outscoring the Dons 47-22 in the second half on its way to a 73-51 win.

Martinez, Weber earn top finishes

NASHUA – Omar Martinez earned the third place spot in the 138 lb. class and Tony Weber placed fourth at 220 to lead GRNTGC at the Nashua-Plainfield Invitational on Saturday. Other place winners for the Rebelhawks included a fifth place showing by Ethan Erhardt and sixth place finishes by Cael Kopriva, Huston Danker, Slade Wagner, and Jacob Walters. GRNTGC placed ninth as a team, and the Clarksville Indians took the team title.
