Johnson, Irvin lead Wolverines to runner-up spot in home tournament

DIKE – Trent Johnson and Tommy Irvin wrestled 5-0 on the day to lead the Wolverines to a second place team finish in their own dual tournament on Saturday. As a team, Dike-New Hartford went 4-1 with their only loss coming at the hands of Washington, 50-28.
Nick Durnin, Connor Ragsdale, DJ Ackerson, Kyle Dennis, and Irvin all recorded falls in the Wolverines’ 66-12 victory over B-G-M.
In their 58-24 win over Saint Ansgar, Kody Kugel, Anna Poyner, Durnin, and Irvin pinned their opponents, and Trent Johnson won by major decision, 15-2.

Rebels top AGWSR, suffer first loss to West Marshall

ACKLEY – The Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys’ basketball team went 1-1 in couple of closely played NICL-West games this past week, picking up a win on the road against AGWSR 48-42 on Tuesday, and suffering their first loss of the season to West Marshall, 63-60 at home on Friday.
The Rebels (4-1 overall, 4-1 NICL-West) will host Denver on Friday, Jan. 3, and Don Bosco of Gilbertville on Saturday, Jan. 4.

Cougar girls top Rebels

ACKLEY – The AGWSR girls’ basketball team prevailed in a close NICL-West contest last Tuesday night with a 50-47 over Gladbrook-Reinbeck.
AGWSR (3-4 overall, 2-2 NICL-West) is scheduled to play at Parkersburg on Thursday, Jan. 2, and will host BCLUW on Tuesday, Jan. 7.

After trailing the first three quarters, AGWSR turned the table to outscore Gladbrook-Reinbeck 18-9 in the fourth period and earn a comeback win over the Rebels.

Cougars fall to Rebels 48-42

ACKLEY – The AGWSR boys’ basketball team dropped a close NICL-West game against Gladbrook-Reinbeck Tuesday, 48-42. The Cougars’ game scheduled for Friday at South Tama was postponed until Thursday, Jan. 16.
AGWSR (4-2 overall, 2-2 NICL-West) is scheduled to play Aplington-Parkersburg at Parkersburg on Thursday, Jan. 2.

Spartans top Meskwaki, threaten unbeaten South Hardin

GRUNDY CENTER – The Spartans girls’ basketball team earned a 60-41 non-conference win over Meskwaki at home on Monday, and gave undefeated South Hardin a good run before falling 65-59 at Eldora on Tuesday.
The Spartans (3-4 overall, 1-3 NICL-West) will host Aplington-Parkersburg after the holiday break on Friday, Jan. 3, before resuming NICL-West play against Gladbrook-Reinbeck at home on Tuesday, Jan. 7.

Spartan boys fall to Meskwaki, South Hardin

GRUNDY CENTER – The Grundy Center boys dropped two games in as many outings this past week, falling to Meskwaki 63-50 in a non-conference matchup on Monday, and suffering their first NICL-West loss to South Hardin, 83-50, on Tuesday.
The Spartans (3-4 overall, 3-1 NICL-West) are scheduled to host Aplington-Parkersburg on Friday, Jan. 3, followed by Gladbrook-Reinbeck on Tuesday, Jan. 7.

Reyes, Meinders take titles at Al DeLeon Invitational

BRITT – The AGWSR wrestling team brought home three individual championships, two runners-up, and a third place finish from the Al DeLeon Invitational at West Hancock High School in Britt on Saturday. Central Springs took the team title by a 42 point margin over second place Sumner-Fredericksburg.    
“The Cougars had a good day on the mat before heading into a well-deserved break,” AGWSR head wrestling coach Chad Gerbracht said. “We really enjoyed the format of this tournament - round robin, everybody wrestles everybody, no juggling of lineups.”

Neuroth lifts D-NH past Hudson

    DIKE — Connor Neuroth hit a pair of critical shots, including the game winner, as Dike-New Hartford edged Hudson in a battle of NICL East contenders.
    The sophomore send the game to overtime with a 3-pointer at the end of regulation and then scored the game winner with a cut to the basket in the waning moments of overtime.
    The Wolverines (4-1 overall, 3-1 in the NICL East) led most of the way before Hudson took the lead in the fourth quarter. The loss in the first of the year in league play for the Pirates, who fall to 4-2 overall.

Rebel girls get big win over West Marshall

REINBECK – For the second week in a row, the Gladbrook-Reinbeck girls split NICL-West games in what is proving to be a tight conference race this season. The Rebels knocked off last year’s conference co-champs West Marshall on Friday 51-42, after losing a close one to AGWSR on Tuesday, 50-47.    
The Rebels (2-4 overall, 2-3 NICL-West) will return from the holiday break to face a couple of non-conference opponents on their home court, Denver on Friday, Jan. 3 and Don Bosco on Saturday, Jan. 4, before resuming conference play at Grundy Center on Tuesday, Jan. 7.
