Leroy Kuper

Leroy Kuper age 71 of Ackley died on May 20, 2015 at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton. Funeral services were May 23 at the Faith Presbyterian Church in Ackley with burial in the West Friesland Cemetery. The Sietsema Funeral Home of Ackley is in charge of arrangements.

Torri Arends Hennig

Torri Lyn Arends Hennig, 34, of Lake Mills, WI, formerly of Dike, died May 22, 2015, at Agrace Hospice Care Center, Janesville, WI. Services will be held at 7 p.m. Friday May 29 at Colfax Presbyterian Church, 18935 K Ave, Holland. Visitation luncheon will follow the memorial service.

Larry L. Benson

Larry Benson passed away at the Iowa River Hospice in Marshalltown, Iowa, on Monday, May 18, 2015, at age 75 from complications of rheumatoid arthritis. A Family Visitation will be held on Friday, May 29 from 7-9 pm at the Minerva Wesley Chapel.  A Memorial Service will be held at the Chapel on Saturday, May 30 at 1 p.m. with a private interment of his ashes at the Reinbeck Cemetery later.

Senior honored for faith, family, football accomplishments

DIKE — Dike-New Hartford senior Zach Nicholson knew he had a chance for some very nice awards at Tuesday’s senior awards assembly. The first one he received may have the most meaning.
Nicholson was surprised with the first award at Tuesday morning’s ceremony, the Iowa Football Coaches’ Assocaition’s Ed Thomas Faith, Family Football Award.
“I was very surprised, I did not expect this,” Nicholson said after receiving the award from IFCA President-Elect Steve Milder. “It was a very nice award and I was honored to receive it.”

Spartan tennis girls fall to South Hardin, A-P

South Hardin, A-P GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy Center High School girls’ tennis team dropped a pair of matches last week by 9-0 scores to South Hardin and Aplington- Parkersburg.
The Spartans (0-7) played in the North Iowa Cedar League Tournament Monday and faced Aplington-Parkersburg in dual team regional play Tuesday.

Hudson/D-NH soccer goes 2-3 in busy week

WAVERLY – The Hudson/Dike- New Hartford girls’ soccer team went 2-1 at the Waverly tournament Saturday. The Pirates defeated Decorah 2-0 and South Tama 10-0, while falling to Class 1A No. 6 Denver 2-1. During the week Hudson/D-NH dropped a road game against ninthranked Columbus 4-1 Thursday, after a scoreless double overtime game with Denver ended in a 4-3 shootout in favor of the Cyclones on Tuesday.

Spartans dominate golf sectional

GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy Center boys’ tennis team took advantage of its home course to score a dominating victory in a Class 1A sectional meet.
The Huskies had the five lowest scores of the meet while winning by 31 shots over second-place Gladbrook-Reinbeck. The Spartans, Rebels and third-place GMG all advance to Thursday’s district meet at Oskaloosa, where the top two finishers advance to the Class 1A state tournament May 29-30 in Marshalltown.

Grundy Center girls send four events to state meet

GRUNDY CENTER – Despite a light, steady rain throughout most of the night at the Class 1A District meet Thursday, the Grundy Center girls’ team put together a number of top performances, many of them in their final performance of the season, while six Lady Spartans earned the right to compete at the 2015 state track and field meet this week.

Spartan boys qualify six events, Rebels four for state meet

GRUNDY CENTER – It seems it wouldn’t be district track if it wasn’t rainy and wet, but the soggy conditions in Grundy Center last Thursday night didn’t limit the accomplishments or dampen the spirits of the competitors at the Class 1A district track and field meet.
Grundy Center had its share of success at the meet, with six Spartan athletes qualifying for the state meet in six different events including one field event, two relays, and three individual running events.
