The Grundy Center High School girls’ golf team once again ascended to the top of the Class 1A mountain Tuesday, bringing home its third straight state championship. The Spartans led by three shots after the first 18 holes Monday and pulled away to a 10-shot victory over runner-up New London. The win is the state-record 14th for the Spartans, all under Coach Rick Schupbach, who announced before the season that this would be his last.

Iconic elementary teacher retires after 45 great years

    GRUNDY CENTER — Andrea Doubet may not know what to do with herself when school returns this fall. Every year since she was 5 years old the routine has been the same whether she was in elementary school, high school, college or teaching herself. Next year, however, will be different.
    Last Friday the long-time Grundy Center teacher said goodbye to her final set of students for a final time, ending a 45-year teaching career that started the same place it ended, in Grundy Center.

Small but mighty GCHS Class of 2015 smiles all the way to diplomas

    GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy Center High School Class of 2015 will go down as one of the smallest classes in school history with just 37 members. Those 37 individuals accomplished remarkable things, however, and they did it with a smile on their faces. Sunday the students celebrated their accomplishments along with family and friends during 2015 commencement ceremonies.
    “We did it — we made it through this long journey together and now we’re going out into the real world,” Class of 2015 president Melanie Homeister said.

Gen. ‘Curley’ Hultman delivers Grundy Center Memorial Day address

    GRUNDY CENTER — Retired Army Reserve Maj. Gen. Evan ‘Curley’ Hultman spoke of preparing for the next generation of war during Grundy Center’s annual Memorial Day service at Rose Hill Cemetery.
    Hultman said war has changed because the enemy is different.
    “War was against nations,” he said. “Today it is different because ISIS doesn’t necessarily wear a uniform. We don’t know who the enemy is.
    “We must gear ourselves again to fight this treacherous enemy which is probably the worst enemy we have ever known,” he said.

Reluctant star Willms enters IGHSAU T & F Hall of Fame

    DES MOINES — Former Dike-New Hartford track and field star Hannah Willms knew what she wanted to do in college from a young age. She loved playing volleyball … that was her sport. Now five years after graduating from high school, Willms finds her home in the hall of fame for a very different sport.
    Willms was one of three individuals inducted into the Iowa Girls’ High School Athletic Union Hall of Fame Saturday on the final day of the state track and field meet.

Grundy Center boys dig deep, earn return trip to state golf tourney

OSKALOOSA – Despite what longtime Grundy Center boys’ golf coach Dennis Dirks describes as a dismal front nine on a tough Oskaloosa course, a late round surge landed the Spartan boys in the runner-up spot at the Class 1A district meet Thursday. The second place finish meant the realization of the number one goal for this year’s Spartan team - returning to the state meet after a second place finish in last year’s state championship. The Spartans finished the day with a team score of 341, 10 strokes behind district champ New London.

Season-best performances highlight state track and field meet

DES MOINES — Several season-best performances were not enough to lead area athletes to gold medals at the state track and field meet last week at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
Area athletes turned in no fewer than 12 season bests and placed in the top eight in 13 events but failed to win an event for the first time in three years. Each area school that qualified athletes for the state meet scored this year, though only one came home in the top 10.
