GC/DNH Academic Decathlon sets records at State

MOUNT VERNON — In almost every way, the 2015 state Academic Decathlon competition looked to be business as usual for Grundy Center/Dike-New Hartford.
    Well prepared … check.
    Ready for a top-three finish … check.
    Expect competition for those three spots to be a dogfight among at least five well-prepared teams … check.

Council approves ‘16 budget

    GRUNDY CENTER — Grundy Center homeowners will see no tax increase in Fiscal 2016. Monday the Grundy Center City Council assured that as it approved its budget following a brief public hearing.

Supervisors decline to formally oppose RICL

GRUNDY CENTER — A group of landowners attempting to stop the construction of the Rock Island Clean Line project that would run through northern and easterm Grundy County received some bad news Monday morning when the county’s Board of Supervisors declined to file a formal objection with the Iowa Utilities Board by a narrow 3-2 vote.

Center Theatre membership drive to be held on March 23

The Center Theatre in Grundy Center will be conducting its 2015 Annual Membership Drive on Monday, March 23.
When looking for quality entertainment in Grundy County, the Center Theatre has long been a favorite choice all ages. Established in 1986 as a non-profit organization and governed by a volunteer board of directors, the Center Theatre has become a valued and vital component of the good life we find in small-town living.

Anabel R. Speicher

Helen Arends

Helen Arends, 91, of Wellsburg died February 17, 2015, at her daughter’s home in New Smyrna Beach, Florida.  Funeral services were February 24 at the Wellsburg Reformed Church in Wellsburg, with Pastor Mark Andersen officiating.  Burial followed at the Wellsburg Reformed Church Cemetery in Wellsburg. Vivolyn “Viv” Katherine Keninger

Vivolyn “Viv” Katherine Keninger  passed away on February 28, 2015. Funeral services will be Thursday, March 5 at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spencer. Interment will be held at the St. Mary’s Cemetery in Ackley at a later date. Vivolyn Katherine Keninger was born on January 19, 1923, in German Township, Grundy County, Iowa, the daughter of Ray and Ella Toomsen. She grew up on a farm near Wellsburg, attended a country school and was a member of St. Peter’s Reformed church.  She graduated from Ackley High School and enrolled in Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls.

Sharon K. Graves

Sharon K. Graves, 71, of Grundy Center passed away Sunday, March 1, 2015, while under the care of Cedar Valley Hospice at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital. A memorial service was held March 7 at the Bethany Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center. Memorials may be directed to the family or Cedar Valley Hospice.

Henrietta S. Buck

Henrietta S. Buck, 96, of Ackley, formerly of Grundy Center, passed away March 4, 2015, at Allen Hospital in Waterloo. A funeral service was held at March 9 at the United Methodist Church in Grundy Center. Burial followed at Maple Hill Cemetery in Gladbrook. Memorials may be directed to the family. Rebels dominate state tournament opener

    DES MOINES — Anybody concerned about how Gladbrook-Reinbeck would acclimate to its first-ever state boys’ basketball tournament appearance needed just six seconds to get their answer ... in the form of a Camden Kickbush 3-pointer.
    That was the story all game as the Rebels drained 11 3-pointers on their way to a surprisingly one-sided 80-57 victory over Nodaway Valley in the first round of the state basketball tournament Monday at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
