Wolverines seventh at state team duals

DES MOINES – The Dike-New Hartford wrestling team closed out the 2014-15 season at the state team duals last Wednesday, earning a seventh place team finish among the elite group of teams competing in Class 1A. In addition to their history making appearance at the state duals, the Wolverines set a new school record in dual wins, closing out the season at 29-6.

Cougar boys advance to district semifinal

NASHUA — A game-high 20 points by Jake Willems propelled the AGWSR boys’ basketball team to a post-season victory last Thursday.
The Cougars captured a 15-point win in the Class 1A, District 4 quarterfinal round, toppling Tripoli, 60-45.
The two teams combined for 19 3-point goals, including 11 for AGWSR. Willems led the winners’ bombing with six triples in 12 tries for 18 of his 20 points. Sophomores Nathan Karsjens and Jay Janssen added 11 points apiece with three treys for Janssen and two for Karsjens.

Rebel girls postseason run ends at Colo

COLO – The Gladbrook-Reinbeck girls’ basketball season came to an end last Tuesday night with a 41-38 loss to Colo-Nesco in a second round regional matchup.

Wolverines advance to district final with win over Hudson

PARKERSBURG – Dike-New Hartford controlled their second round district game with Hudson from the start last Thursday night, taking an 11-7 first quarter lead, then turning things up defensively in the second period, going on a 14-0 run while holding Hudson scoreless for almost seven minutes.
“I thought we came out ready,” Dike-New Hartford head coach Greg Moore said. “Our scoring was very spread out. We were able to control the boards and limited Hudson to just three guys scoring in the first half.”

D-NH girls overcome adversity in regional wins

DIKE — Dike-New Hartford overcame the loss of its starting point guard to win its first two regional games last week, 55-44 over Alburnett in a regional quarterfinal and 62-41 over Hudson in a regional semi.
    The Wolverines (22-2) fell to Iowa City Regina 42-29 in the Class 2A, Region 6 final Monday. A related story on that game is printed elsewhere in today’s sports section.
    D-NH played all three regional games without senior Briana Weber, who left the team after the regular season.

Wolverines make history

In the 28-year history of the State Dual Wrestling Tournament, 143 different schools had qualified, not one of which had been from Grundy County ... until now. Last Tuesday Dike-New Hartford became the first Grundy County school to qualify for the duals, upsetting fifth-ranked Eddyville-Blakesburg for the dual team title. The 10th-ranked Wolverines (26-4 in duals) faced third-ranked Alburnett in the first round of the duals Wednesday at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Results of the meet will be posted to The Grundy Register web site and Facebook page.

National Honor Society inducts 12

    GRUNDY CENTER — The largest group in recent memory was inducted to the Grundy Center High School Maggie Gray Chapter of the National Honor Society Friday evening.
