Grassley, Dix discuss gas tax, educational spending at forum

WELLSBURG — The potential for a gas tax increase and educational spending were hot topics Saturday as local legislators hosted a listening post at the Wellsburg Public Library.
State Sen. Bill Dix (R, Shell Rock) and State Rep. Pat Grassley (R, New Hartford) hosted the forum with eight people from the Wellsburg, Dike and Grundy Center areas. The meeting was part of a whirlwind four-stop tour that morning that also included stops in Conrad, Beaman and Steamboat Rock.

Hot-shooting Spartans dominate East Marshall

The Spartans, who entered the game shooting less than 40 percent from the field, hit 29 of their 43 shots, including 29-of-39 before their second wave of reserves came in late in the fourth quarter.

Spartans hold off East Marshall rally

LeGRAND – Grundy Center held off a furious East Marshall fourth-quarter rally to snap a three-game losing streak with a 55-46 victory Friday in LeGrand.
The Spartans (10-7 overall, 7-5 in the NICL West Division) led by 15 points in the third quarter before the Mustangs closed to within two points in the fourth.
“The girls stepped up,” Coach Matt Lindeman said. “We’ve done that at different times. We hit a key stretch there where Jill (Itzen) hit a key bucket and we weren’t necessarily looking for a shot but she reacted and made a nice bucket to extend it.”

Three earn NICL mat titles

CONRAD – The end of the 2013-14 wrestling season is not a fond memory for Dike-New Harford senior Tommy Irvin. 2014-15 appears to be better.
A year after illness led to tough losses and watching teammates at the state tournament, Irvin began the 2014-15 postseason in style Saturday, winning the 285-pound title at the North Iowa Cedar League tournament in Conrad.

NICL schools continue enrollment decline

Grundy County school districts are not the only districts in this part of the state to see continued enrollment declines. A report compiled by The Grundy Register from Iowa Department of Education data shows the decline continues to hit North Iowa Cedar League schools as well.
Certified enrollment at the 15 public NICL schools dropped 1.6 percent on the official count date of the 2014-15 school year from 11,671.8 a year ago to 11,489.6.
