Rebels snap four-game skid

    REINBECK — Gladbrook-Reinbeck broke out of its 2015 funk Saturday, snapping a four-game losing streak with a 53-44 victory over Ogden at the All-Iowa Attack Fieldhouse in Ames.
    The victory was the Rebels’ first of the new year. After entering the holiday break on a three-game winning streak, they lost their first four games since returning, all by double digits.
    The Rebels also dropped a pair of North Iowa Cedar League West Division games last week, 55-41 to South Hardin and 62-39 to Hudson.
 

Union damages D-NH hopes of defending title

    DIKE — The Dike-New Hartford boys’ basketball team’s hope of defending its North Iowa Cedar League East Division title took a serious hit Friday, as the Wolverines could not overcome bad breaks in a 54-47 loss to Union Community.
    The Wolverines (8-4 overall, 7-2 NICL East) led only briefly and trailed by as many as eight points in the second half before rallying. They also defeated Columbus Catholic last week, 56-32.
    D-NH traveled to Jesup Tuesday and hosts Sumner-Fredericksburg Friday.   

 

Herman Frey

Herman passed away on January 11, 2015, at the Clarksville Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Clarksville. Visitation was held Tuesday, at the Redman-Schwartz Funeral Home in Parkersburg, and one hour before services at the church.   Funeral Services were held 1:30 p.m., on January 14, 2015, at Reformed Church of Stout in Stout, with Dale Jansen officiating.

Donald G. Steinfadt

Donald G. Steinfadt age 80, of Grundy Center, formerly of the Cedar Rapids area, passed away January 16, 2015, at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital, while under the care of Cedar Valley Hospice. A funeral service was held January 19 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Reinbeck. Burial was held privately. Memorials may be directed to the family. Eldon Klaassen

Eldon Klaassen, 80, of Grundy Center passed away January 16, 2015, at Grundy County Memorial Hospital, while under the care of Cedar Valley Hospice.  A visitation will be held on Thursday, January 22, from 4 to 7 p.m., and the funeral will be on Friday, January 23, at 10:30 a.m., both at Colfax Center Presbyterian Church, 18935 K Avenue, Holland. Dike announces plan for major sports complex

    DIKE —  A major project that has become Dike’s talk of the town will publicly kickoff next Wednesday. The Kruger-Hemmen Sports Complex, a nearly million-dollar outdoor recreational complex along Highway 20, will be discussed in detail at the Dike Community Center on Jan. 21 at 7 p.m.
    “We are excited to give residents more specifics about the design of the complex, the construction progress, our capital campaign plans and more,” said Justin Stockdale, leader of the steering committee.

Compensation Board recommends 4 percent raises

GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy County Compensation Board recommended a 4 percent salary increase for elected officials following a lengthy discussion last Friday at the Grundy County Courthouse.
    The increase, which must be approved by the Board of Supervisors, came after the officials requested a 3 percent raise. The difference came about during discussion, which included a request from the County Auditor’s representative on the Board, Arlan Schaap, for an additional $2,000 on top of the 3 percent request.

State of the City — Buhrow reflects on first year as mayor

    GRUNDY CENTER — Brian Buhrow has seen a lot of change in his first year as Grundy Center’s mayor. As he enters the second year of his first term, he is already looking to the future for Grundy County’s largest community and county seat.
    “It was a very busy year,” he said. “One of the things I learned is that the city is going in every different direction. I have a great appreciation for it.”
    Buhrow said the biggest thing he saw in his first year is that the time commitment to the mayoral position is greater than he had expected.
