Cougars record first volleyball victories

    ACKLEY — AGWSR picked up its first two volleyball wins of the season Saturday, placing third in the Gladbrook-Reinbeck Tournament.
    The Cougars (2-12) entered the tournament 0-10, but scored victories over North Butler and GMG while falling to eventual tournament champion and runner-up BCLUW and Gladbrook-Reinbeck.
    AGWSR also dropped its only NICL West match of the week, 3-0 to a BCLUW team that remains one of only two unbeatens in league play.

D-NH blanks Clayton Ridge 35-0

DIKE – The Dike-New Hartford Wolverines accumulated 418 yards of total offense on their way to a 35-0 homecoming win over Class 1A District 4 rival Clayton Ridge last Friday night.
“I thought our kids played very well,” Dike-New Hartford head coach Don Betts said. “I was proud of the effort and proud of how they were able to focus on the game during all the Homecoming festivities. We still have things we need to improve on, but we are getting better each week.”

Spartans refocus after disappointing Benton Invite

BENTON – The Grundy Center Spartan volleyball team is looking to refocus and regroup after falling short at the Benton Invitational Saturday. The Spartans, who went 3-2 against quality opponents, are working to refine their game as they look ahead to even tougher competition this coming week.
“We played some good competition,” Grundy Center head coach Darwin Sents said, “but we weren’t in our finest form. It was a disappointing day from the standpoint of how we played. We just have to get better and learn from it.”

Rebels take runner-up spot in own tourney

REINBECK – The Gladbrook-Reinbeck volleyball team made a strong showing at their own tournament Saturday, winning three consecutive matches before falling to BCLUW in the final match of the day. The Rebels took second place overall while the Comets were crowned tournament champions.  
G-R started the day strong with a 21-3, 21-15 win over GMG. The Rebels followed that with a 21-17, 21-8 win over North Butler. AGWSR would challenge the Rebels in match three, pushing it to three sets before G-R prevailed 21-16, 13-21, 15-10.

Lippert medals as IF-A/AGWSR competes in BCLUW Invite

UNION — Iowa Falls-Alden/AGWSR senior Jessica Lippert was the lone local runner to medal Saturday, leading the Cadets at the BCLUW Comet Invitational at the South Hardin Recreation Area in Union.
    Lippert placed fifth on the night, just 16 seconds short of a top-three finish. Her effort was not enough to pull the Cadets to a strong team finish, however, as they placed seventh in the eight-team field.

IF-A/AGWSR, Grundy Center teams compete at Ballard Invitational

HUXLEY – The 34th running of the Ballard Invitational took place on Monday, Sept. 15. on grounds of the Huxley Golf Course, with Iowa Falls-Alden/AGWSR competing in the Class A large school division, and Grundy Center competing in the Class C small school division.
IF-A/AGWSR’s Bethany Lippert ran to a top 10 finish in the girls’ Class A Varsity race, placing eighth to bring home a medal amongst a field of 64 runners. Jessica Lippert finished 24th and Taylor Dougan went 39th. Eri Siems ran to 47th, Desiree Folsom 50th, Patience Kauzlarich 51st, and MaeAnna Ubben 53rd.

Stoakes runs for 198 as Rebels shut out Denver

GLADBROOK — Eric Stoakes ran for 198 yards and two touchdowns, lifting Gladbrook-Reinbeck to its second straight shutout victory Friday, 43-0 over Denver.
The Rebels (3-1 overall, 2-0 in Class A, District 4) held Denver to 211 offensive yards and forced three turnovers. After allowing 25 points in each of their first two games, G-R has held back-to-back opponents off the scoreboard. Rebel coach John Olson said the 25 points his team allowed the first two weeks is deceiving.

Dr. Harry Heddens, 100, former longtime Wellsburg Veterinarian, died September 20, 2014, at the Bickford Cottage in Iowa City. Graveside Memorial services will be held  1:30 pm, Saturday, September 27 at the Wellsburg Reformed Church Cemetery, Wellsburg.
