G-R girls fall in regional opener

    TRAER — An old bugaboo reared its ugly head one final time for the Gladbrook-Reinbeck girls’ basketball team Saturday, as the Rebels saw their season end with a 63-46 loss to North Tama in a Class 2A regional opener.
    The Rebels (8-13), who went 2-7 on the road in the regular season, could not break the curse in their second game in Traer in two weeks.

REINBECK — The Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys’ basketball team wrapped up its sterling regular season last week with a pair of non-district victories.
The Rebels (19-2) downed Aplington-Parkersburg 63-53 last Tuesday and won their regular-season finale over Wapsie Valley 71-55 Thursday.
The Rebels host the winner of Monday’s BCLUW-CAL game Thursday at 8 p.m. The game is the second of a district doubleheader, with North Tama and GMG meeting in the opener.

Wolverine girls finish regular season with 18-2 mark

DIKE – The Dike-New Hartford girls’ basketball team moved to 18-2 with a couple of wins in their final regular season games at home last week. The Wolverines downed West Marshal 54-37 Tuesday, after handing Grundy Center a 76-35 loss on Monday.
After a first round bye, the Class 2A No. 8 Wolverines were to host Grundy Center on Tuesday, Feb. 16 at 7:00 p.m. in the second round of the Class 2A Region 2 bracket.

AGWSR boys wrap up regular season

 ACKLEY — The AGWSR boys’ basketball team wrapped up its regular season last week with a pair of victories and a tough loss.
    The Cougars dominated Meskwaki Settlement 78-61 Monday and came from behind to win at Denver 51-48 Tuesday. Friday they hosted Jesup, dropping a 63-52 decision. AGWSR finishes its regular season with a 14-7 record.
    The Cougars host either Grundy Center or Clarksville in a second-round district tournament game Thursday after receiving a first-round bye. Clarksville and Grundy Center played Monday.

Cougars dominate Cal

ACKLEY – Hot-shooting AGWSR hit four early 3-pointers and never looked back on its way to a 54-24 Class 1A, Region 2 first-round victory over CAL, Latimer Thursday in Ackley.
The Cougars (12-10) used the early success from the outside to build a 14-2 lead in the first five minutes and led by double digits most of the game from there.
“One of our goals was that we had to get out and establish that we were a team that they were going to have to play catchup with all night long,” AGWSR coach Laurie Gann said.
