Wolverine girls fall in regional final

    JEWELL — Dike-New Hartford could not hold an early lead Monday as it’s dream of a state girls’ basketball berth fell in a barrage of Manson-Northwest Webster jump shots, 45-37 at Southeast Webster High School Monday.
    The Wolverines (20-3) scored just 18 points in the final three quarters after jumping ahead 19-12 in the first eight minutes.

Strong start lifts Cougars past Spartans in districts

ACKLEY – There were no secrets when the AGWSR and Grundy Center boys’ basketball teams took the court in a Class 1A District 4 quarterfinal Saturday. The NICL-West foes split their regular season conference games with each claiming a win on their home court, most recently a 73-71 overtime win by the Cougars. On Saturday it was more than just the home court advantage that gave AGWSR the tie-breaking win and the right to continue down the tournament trail, as the Cougars downed Grundy Center with a big 57-38 win.

Rebels outlast Comets in district quarterfinal

REINBECK- In two previous matchups this season, Gladbrook-Reinbeck pummeled BCLUW by an average of 26 points, but the Comets did not go down without a fight in Friday night’s Class 1A District 4 quarterfinal in Reinbeck. BCLUW kept the score close for the majority of the game, but the inside-out combination of Zach Pierce and Joe Smoldt led the sixth-ranked Rebels to a 61-51 win and a spot in the district semifinals against GMG.
“(BCLUW) has been improving all year,” G-R coach Scott Kiburis said. “They’re one of the better teams in this tournament, and we knew that going in.”

Wolverines advance to regional final

DIKE – The Dike-New Hartford girls knocked off another NICL-West team on their way to the Class 2A Region 2 final, besting South Hardin 59-33 in the semifinal game on Friday.
The Wolverines controlled the game from start to finish, opening with a 15-6 lead in the first quarter and holding a 27-15 halftime advantage. The second half saw them outscore the Tigers by seven more in each of the final two quarters to further spread the gap and take the win by a 26 point margin.    

Parker lights it up as Wolverines cruise past Hudson in district semis

DIKE- Hudson gave Dike-New Hartford one of its three losses earlier in the season, and the Wolverines entered Saturday night’s rematch in the Class 2A District 6 semifinals prepared for a tight battle with the Pirates. The third meeting turned into a blowout, however, as D-NH senior guard Carson Parker exploded for 29 points, and the Wolverines cruised to an easy 68-44 win on Saturday night in Dike.

Seven inducted into National Honor Society

The Maggie Gray Chapter of the National Honor Society at Grundy Center High School inducted seven new members and a surprise honorary member during a ceremony last Thursday. Gabrielle Haman, Ehtan Hogle, Abigail Taylor, Esther Edgerton, Melanie Homeister, Michelle McIntire and Brock Rohler were cited during the ceremony and signed their names into the school’s N.H.S. Register. The chapter also inducted retiring Secondary Principal Steve VanderPol as an honorary member. Pictured, Emily Robinson places a pin Edgerton’s lapel.

P.E meets technology at D-NH Junior High

    NEW HARTFORD — Physical education met technology last week at Dike-New Hartford Junior High School, as a month-long unit reached its conclusion with the playing of student-created fitness videos.
    P.E. Teacher Jann Miller came up with the idea of working with students’ new laptop computers to create videos that could be used during class.
    “I started a fitness based curriculum this year, and one of the things I thought with them going 1-to-1 computers was how could we bring those things together,” she said.

Five to enter GCHS Sports Hall of Fame

    GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy Center Sports Hall of Fame announced the election of two new athletes and three coaches to be inducted during Felix Grundy Days festivities this summer.
    Elected to the Class of 2014 are Roger Peters, Randy Peters, Steve Bergman, Clint Young and Dana Schmidt.
