Fun-filled festivities for all at Dike Watermelon Days

DIKE- Summer festival season isn’t over yet, as Dike’s Watermelon Days celebration is right around the corner this coming weekend.
This year’s events will include many of the old favorites as well as an open house to commemorate the completion of the multimillion-dollar new fire station and the support of the community in voting overwhelmingly to approve a bond issue for the project.
The popular softball tournament will also be back this year, and the Fredsville Lutheran Church will host a community worship service in the park followed by a meal on Sunday morning.

Dike Fire Dept. celebrates grand opening of new fire station

DIKE - More than a year and a half in the making, the brand new $1.5 million Dike Fire Station is finally complete, and members of the Dike Fire Department are ready to show off their new facility during an open house this Saturday during the annual Watermelon Days celebration.
Dike Fire Chief Marv Geiken says the department is thrilled with their new space.

Donna Kay Novak, age 68, of Grundy Center died on July 20, 2019, at UnityPoint Health – Allen Hospital in Waterloo. A memorial service for Donna was held July 25 at the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church in Holland. Pastor Rick Vollema officiated the service. 

Matthew Steelsmith

Matthew Steelsmith, 50, of Beaman passed away July 17, 2019. Private graveside services will be held at a later date. Inurnment will be at the Conrad Cemetery in Conrad. Arrangements are entrusted to the Conrad Chapel
of the Anderson Funeral Homes. Memorials may be directed to the Marshalltown Animal Rescue League in memory of Matt. Online condolences may be sent to www.andersonfhs.com.

Erwin Garcona, Gabriel Laizer, Martin Curia and Elizabeth Righa were a long way from home when they visited Conrad for the Growing Hope Globally conference and celebration in Conrad over the weekend, but they relished the opportunity to learn about Iowa agriculture firsthand and see a different side of America than what they’d been exposed to in the past.
           

Walking the walk: Fallon shares Climate March story at Kling Memorial Library

Former Democratic gubernatorial candidate and state representative Ed Fallon, like millions of other Americans, read the headlines and saw the warnings about the havoc that global climate change could wreak, and he wanted to do something about it. As others took steps like recycling, buying hybrid vehicles and reducing their meat and dairy consumption, Fallon decided to walk across the country.
