Schafer chosen to show at Governor’s Charity Steer Show

GRUNDY COUNTY - When 14-year-old Sidney Schafer of Wellsburg found out that she had earned the chance to represent Grundy County at the annual Governor’s Charity Steer Show at the Iowa State Fair, it was more than just a chance to showcase the county’s excellence in beef production; it was a way for her to give back and help others.

County Custodian Mark Jungling came before the board of supervisors on Monday morning to explore options for bollards around gas meters and the potential of hiring an exterminator to deal with centipedes, ants, spiders and bats in the courthouse.
           

Growing Hope Globally hosts annual Summer Celebration in Conrad

CONRAD - Volunteer partners from over a dozen states gathered in Conrad on Friday night to kick off the annual Growing Hope Globally (formerly Food Resource Bank) Summer Celebration.
 
Growing Hope Globally is a national organization that was founded in 1999 as a Christian response to ending world hunger through sustainable agriculture and community involvement. For many years, the organization was known as Food Resource Bank. Today, GHG partners with a number of different organizations to help small farmers in developing countries grow their own food.
 

Five BCLUW softball players on All-NICL West top team

The All-NICL West Softball Teams were released early last week as teams in the league prepared for the postseason.
  
BCLUW's Bailey Ashton, Cate Nason, Kiersten Kruse, Easton Swanson and Olivia Hughes were all named to the first team. AGWSR's Ali Gerbracht and Carrinton Hunt were also top-team picks and Grundy Center's Brooke Flater earned a first-team spot.
  
East Marshall senior Madison Farrington was named the NICL West's Outstanding Player, while BCLUW coach Megan Yantis earned Coach of the Year after the Comets went undefeated in the NICL West at 12-0.

Tscherter named NICL West's Outstanding Player

Gladbrook-Reinbeck junior Tyler Tscherter was named Most Outstanding Player as part of the All-NICL West baseball teams released on Monday.
  
Tscherter hit nine home runs in 37 at-bats against league competition this summer, collecting 29 RBI and batting at a .514 clip with an on-base percentage of .608 and a slugging percentage of 1.378. As G-R's top pitcher, Tscherter was 5-1 in six starts against league competition, allowing six earned runs in 37 and one-third innings pitched. He struck out 60 with 11 walks.
  

Dike-New Hartford baseball stumbles defensively in district final

DIKE – In recent seasons, defense has been a cornerstone of Dike-New Hartford baseball.
  
While D-NH head coach Sean Leonard did not write off Saturday's district final with Roland-Story as a gimme for the third-ranked Wolverines, he admits he did not foresee defensive issues being D-NH's downfall.
  
Alas, the Norsemen collected four unearned runs in the early stages of the district championship in Dike and the Wolverines didn't get enough hits to drop in response, bringing D-NH's season to an end in a 7-5 Roland-Story victory.
  

Alburnett knocks out Gladbrook-Reinbeck baseball

ALBURNETT – Gladbrook-Reinbeck baseball's summer came to an end against third-ranked Alburnett, with the Pirates winning a 10-0 game in six innings last Wednesday at Alburnett High School.
  
The game was delayed from Tuesday evening after storms rolled into Alburnett during the conclusion of Belle Plaine vs. North Tama. While that game eventually finished Tuesday night after the field dried out, the nightcap was pushed back 24 hours.
  

Don Bosco storms past Grundy Center in district baseball semis

HUDSON – After a rain delay that left both teams waiting in their dugouts for almost an hour and a half, Don Bosco pounced on Grundy Center in the first inning and coasted to a 13-1 district semifinal victory in Hudson last Tuesday night.    
           
The Dons (26-4), reaching the semifinals with a 31-0 win over Collins-Maxwell, got to Spartan pitcher Travis Kuester quickly with back-to-back doubles from Kendall Becker and Cael Frost, and Kuester was pulled after just 1/3 of an inning when Fischer Ohrt singled to make it 2-0.
           

Dike-New Hartford's Goos plays in Shrine Bowl

CEDAR FALLS – Dike-New Hartford graduate Owen Goos represented the Wolverines as part of the North Squad of the Iowa Shrine Bowl All-Star Football Classic, played at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls last Saturday afternoon.
  
The 47th iteration of the annual game was won by the South, 24-13. Goos played in the second and fourth quarters on the defensive line.
  
Saturday's game was Goos' first time back on the UNI-Dome turf since the state championship game earlier this school year. D-NH lost to West Sioux, 52-38.
  

D-NH's Reece Beuter named NICL East MVP

Dike-New Hartford junior Reece Beuter earned Most Valuable Player honors in the All-NICL East Baseball Teams released last Saturday night.
  
Beuter was one of four D-NH players on the first team, along with Drew Sonnenberg, Parker Kiewiet and Zak Wauters. Wolverine senior Tim Koop was a second-team selection and senior Ely Sohn earned honorable mention.
