For the love of reading: D-NH English teacher receives $2,000 grant for classroom library

DIKE - The benefits of reading have been proven time and again through research; reading boosts mental stimulation, improves analytical thinking skills, expands vocabulary, improves memory and so much more.
For D-NH High School language arts teacher Lauren Petri, reading is an extremely important focus in her teaching, which is why Petri was thrilled to find out she had won a $2,000 Book Love Foundation Grant that will allow her to purchase new books for her classroom.

Clarence Henze

Clarence Henze, 94, of Grundy Center passed away on July 19, 2019, at Arlington Place Assisted Living in Grundy Center. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, July 26 at the Abels Funeral and Cremation Service, Engelkes Chapel in Grundy Center. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 27 at Orchard Hill Church: Grundy County Campus.

Offensive struggles sink Cougars (PHOTOS)

ACKLEY – A pair of minor mistakes in the first inning of Monday's regional final between AGWSR softball and Bishop Garrigan ended up being enough for the Golden Bears to advance to the Class 1A state tournament, 1-0 winners over the Cougars.
  
A pitch got away from Cougar pitcher Taryan Barrick that hit Mackenzie Meister with one out in the first inning. Meister stole second and Emma Fogarty ripped a double to the right-field fence to score Meister as the game's only run.
  

Denise Yantis

Denise Yantis, 62, of Marshalltown, formerly of Conrad, passed away July 8, 2019, at her and Leon’s favorite fishing spot in Walker, MN. Funeral Services were July 13 at the Journey Church, 700 East Olive Street in Marshalltown. Rev. Jacob Rahrig officiated. Visitation was held July 12 at Anderson Funeral Homes in Marshalltown. 

Ilene Bernhardt

Ilene Ann Bernhardt, 86, of Dike passed away July 12, 2019 ,at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, following a brief illness. Visitation was held July 16 at Abels Funeral & Cremation Service-Dike Chapel, Dike. A Mass of Christian Burial was held July 17 at St. Gabriel Catholic Church in rural Reinbeck with Father David Kucera officiating. 

Lisa Loewen

Lisa Jane Loewen, 55, of Leavenworth, Kansas, died on June 23, 2019. Her memorial was held on Tuesday July 2, 2019, at the Belden Larkin Funeral Home. She was laid to rest at Leavenworth National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Catholic Charites of Northeast Kansas, 716 North 5th Street, Leavenworth, Kansas 66048. 

Franz Peter Wind V

Franz Peter Wind V, 31, of Marshalltown passed away at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines on July 14, 2019, with his family at his side. A visitation for family and friends was held July 16, 2019 at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. Memorials in Franz’s name may be directed to the Wounded Warrior Project. 

Lois Wessels

Lois Mae Wessels, age 86, of Aplington passed away July 3, 2019, at Parker Place in Parkersburg, of natural causes. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, July 20 at First Reformed Church in Aplington. Pastor Brett Vander Berg will officiate the service. Marissa Wessels will be the pianist and she will accompany the congregation as they sing “What A Day That Will Be,” “I Know Who Holds Tomorrow” and “Victory In Jesus.”
