Arlene Harmon

Arlene G. Harmon, 97, of Liscomb passed away June 28, 2019, at Oakview Nursing Home in Conrad. Funeral services were July 3 at the Conrad United Methodist Church in Conrad. Linda Peters

Linda Lee Peters, age 71, died June 26, 2019, at home in Maxwell. Visitation for Linda was June 29th from 1:00 until time of her funeral service beginning at 3:00 PM at the Wellsburg Reformed Church. A private interment was held at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter. Memorials may be directed to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital (please include Linda’s name in the check memo.)

Irene Alber

Irene Lois Alber, age 91 of Yakima, Washington passed away on June 22, 2019, in Vancouver, Washington. Having lived in the Yakima area for 40 years, she moved to Vancouver, just recently to be near her family. Irene was born on October 9, 1927, in Grundy Center to Florence (Banner) and Harry Dittmer. She graduated from Allen Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Waterloo as a registered nurse.

Breaking ground: new campsite set for unveiling at Grundy County Fair

Jared Gutknecht has had a vision for both the Grundy County Fair and the fairgrounds as a year-round destination since he took over as the president of the Fair Board, and his ideas have been enthusiastically received among fellow board members and local supporters. One key piece of the larger puzzle is about to fall into place as the 30-spot campsite just east of the grandstand is set to be ready for action by the time this year’s festivities commence on July 16.
           

New sign in Conrad warns South Main speeders

In response to complaints directed to city hall and the Grundy County Sheriff’s Office, law enforcement officials have increased their presence along South Main Street in Conrad and installed a sign that reads “Slow Down, Kids Playing.”
           

Supervisors view new voting machines, take no action on purchase

The Grundy County Board of Supervisors walked to the annex building and received a detailed summary of new voting machines from Dani Dunham of Matt Parrott Election Services during Monday morning’s regular meeting.
           

Close encounters of the third kind: UFO enthusiast presents at Kling Memorial Library

After speaking to a group of children and adults for about a half hour at the library in Grundy Center last Wednesday morning, Chad Lewis had them split almost evenly into who believed in Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs) and who doesn’t.
           
Lewis has been fascinated by the topic for as long as he can remember, perhaps in part due to his home state of Wisconsin: three of its cities claim the title of “UFO Capitals of the World.” In Grundy Center, he shared several Iowa-centric stories, even including some of the downtown buildings from here in town.

Sweet treats: New ice cream shop opens in Grundy Center

GRUNDY CENTER - The people of Grundy Center have spoken: they wanted ice cream, and now they have ice cream … along with malts, milkshakes, sno cones, and other sweet treats available at the community’s newest business: Sweet Tooth Icy Treats.
 
Located in the former Grundy Motor building at 1309 G Avenue, Sweet Tooth Icy Treats opened for business late last month and has been teeming with customers ever since.
 
Vern Folkedahl, who owns the building, says the ice cream shop is a partnership between him and his 9-year-old granddaughter Jenna Blythe. 
 

City of GC approves development agreement for upper elementary renovation

GRUNDY CENTER - As local daycares take on more new youngsters and the wait list for preschool spans three to four years, the City of Grundy Center is faced with the ever growing need for preschool and child care services in town.
 
In an effort to address the needs of families and children in the community, the city is taking a step towards action.During their Monday night meeting, the council voted unanimously to hire 571 Polson Development, LLC, to assist in a plan for the renovation of the old upper elementary building.
