Businesses fill long-vacant Grundy Center storefronts

    GRUNDY CENTER — A pair of formerly vacant Grundy Center storefronts are now full thanks to the efforts of two local entrepreneurs. Grundy Center Chamber of Commerce members cut the ribbons on the new Crazy Daisies location as well as at the new Lillians store. Both are located in the 600 block of G Avenue.
    Lillians, located in the former Stylish Living location, brings a wide selection of new women’s wear downtown while Crazy Daisy’s brings a selection of primitive country home decor.

Council corrects long-standing zoning issue

    GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy Center City Council changed a long-standing zoning law that had been used incorrectly during Monday’s regular Council meeting.
    The property at 1309 G Avenue, the location of Park Place Restaurant, has long been zoned for residential property. Monday’s action changes to zoning to commercial.
    Joann McKinnon, owner of Park Place, urged Council to make the change.
    “It has been run as commercial for the past 59 years; it is only right that the Grundy Center City Council make it right,” she said.

Sitting up straight has new meaning at Grundy Center Elementary

    GRUNDY CENTER — Sitting up straight has a whole new meaning in a Grundy Center Elementary classroom.
    Since just before Christmas, students in Jan Lindaman’s third-grade classroom began using specialized equipment on both their school desks and chairs aimed at improving their posture.
    “The main idea is that we have the kids at 60-degree angles at their hips so their knees are angled down,” she said.

Senate candidate woo Grundy County Republicans

    DIKE — Three of the five candidates vying for the Republican nomination to face Bruce Braley (D - Waterloo) in the upcoming race to replace the retiring Tom Harkin in the United States Senate wooed Grundy County Republicans last Saturday at the annual Republican fundraising dinner.
    Sam Clovis, Scott Schaben and Matt Whitaker alternatively took shots at President Barack Obama’s policies while touting why voters should choose them to run against presumptive nominee Braley.

Could Main Street Iowa program thrive in Grundy Center?

    GRUNDY CENTER — More than 60 local business owners and interested individuals attended a meeting last Tuesday (March 25) to learn about the possibility of Grundy Center applying for the Main Street Iowa program.

School Board approves agreement with YMCA

    GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy Center School Board unanimously approved a new agreement with the Grundy Center YMCA, continuing a partnership that has been in place for more than four years.
    After discussing the agreement extensively at the February meeting, the Board passed the newly-created agreement without comment. The new agreement changes language in four paragraphs of the agreement, noting specifically when the School District has priority use of the equipment in the fitness center, which will remain in the secondary building.
