Gilbert out as Grundy Center Police Chief

    GRUNDY CENTER — Grundy Center is seeking a new police chief.
    Mayor Brian Buhrow confirmed last Friday that Police Chief Brock Gilbert is no longer with the department. He said he could not comment further and did not indicate whether or not Gilbert left on his own or if he was relieved of duties.
    “It’s a personnel matter and I cannot comment,” he said.

GC/DNH academic decathletes third at state, advance to Nationals

    JOHNSTON — After a three year absence from the awards podium, the Grundy Center/Dike-New Hartford Academic Decathlon team stormed to a third place finish at the state competition in Johnston March 7 and 8.
    The GC-DNH point total of 29,000 will also allow them to represent Iowa in the United States Academic Decathlon (USAD) National Online Competition in April.

On our own soil

Renowned stage performer Pippa White presented her newest show “On Our Own Soil” to a large crowd at the Grundy County Museum in Morrison Sunday. White’s one-person show took the audience through the Civil War as she portrayed characters male and female from both the Union and Confederate sides of the battlefield. Using different voice intonations and a variety of hats, White’s portrayal of the bloodiest war fought on American soil was unique. White has performed throughout the Midwest and beyond.

Grundy Center school tax levy set to drop 14 percent

    GRUNDY CENTER — In the midst of bad news for taxpayers as cities and counties across the state are being forced to raise taxes, a bright spot is on the horizon for taxpayers in the Grundy Center Community School District.
    The district has submitted a preliminary budget that will drop its tax rate by more than 14 percent, from $15.74104 per $1,000 valuation last year to $13.50671 this year.

County Supervisors approve 2015 budget

    GRUNDY CENTER — The Grundy County Board of Supervisors approved the County’s Fiscal 2015 budget Monday, capping several weeks of balancing departmental needs against money coming in.
    The approved budget includes a tax rate of $8.85432 per $1,000 valuation in rural areas and $5.66244 for urban areas. The rates are up from $8.46802 (rural) and $5.35271 (urban) a year ago.
    The budget includes $4.65 million for roads and transportation, $2.08 million for capital projects and $1.93 million for public safety and legal services.

Grundy Center a host location for Live Healthy Iowa run/walk

AMES — Live Healthy Iowa has selected Grundy Center as a host site for the inaugural year of Live Healthy Iowa’s 5K run/walk and 1K kid’s run.
Grundy Center was chosen as one of ten communities throughout the state to host the event on Saturday, April 12, 2014. The run/walk serves as a finale celebration for the nearly 28,000 Iowans participating in the 2014 10 Week Wellness Challenge. All Iowans are welcome to participate in this family-friendly event and enjoy the refreshing spring weather!

First-ever: All-Stater Dumler is third-team INA All-State pick

    DIKE — The Dike-New Hartford High School girls’ basketball team has had a lot of firsts in its 2013-14 season. Add one more to a list that includes its first top-10 ranking, first 20-win season and first conference championship as senior Ashley Dumler becomes the team’s first five-on-five basketball all-stater after helping the Wolverines achieve their multitude of team goals.

Dumler, Weber garner first team all-NICL East honors; Dall named Coach of the Year

    A pair of Dike-New Hartford girls were among seven players selected to the North Iowa Cedar League East Division’s first-team all-conference squad.
    Senior Ashley Dumler and junior Briana Weber were unanimously selected to the team, which is picked by league coaches. In addition, D-NH Coach Bruce Dall was selected as the league’s Coach of the Year, juniors Brooke Morgan and Olivia Verhulst were selected to the second-team all-conference unit and junior Rachel Koop was an honorable mention selection.
