Supervisors approve new motor grader purchase

The Grundy County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the purchase of a 2019 John Deere motor grader and trade-in of a 1999 model during its regular meeting on Monday morning.
           
According to County Engineer Gary Mauer, the 2019 John Deere 772 six-wheel drive will cost around $307,000, and with a $32,000 trade-in for the 1999 CH with 14,000 hours on it, the net cost will be around $275,000.
           

All-state soccer teams released

The Iowa Girls Coaches Association and Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association recently released their all-state soccer teams, with several area athletes recognized.
IGCA: In Class 1A, Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck's Maddie McMartin and Taylor Gienger, both seniors, received second-team all-state recognition. Ellie Foster of Hudson/Dike-New Hartford was also a second-team pick in her junior season with the Pirates.

Spartans, Weber on all-district golf teams

The Iowa Girls Coaches Association released all-district golf teams over the weekend.
 
In Class 1A District 4, Grundy Center golfers Frannie Brown and Lauren Dirks earned spots on the team, joining District 4's Coach of the Year Heather Gutknecht.
 
The Spartans reached the state golf tournament this spring, finishing fifth at the Class 1A tourney in Marshalltown.
  
Dike-New Hartford's Morgan Weber was an all-district selection in Class 2A District 3.
  

Bonita Lebo

Bonita Rae “Bonnie” Lebo, 68, of Grundy Center, formerly of Grand Island, passed away on Friday, June 14, 2019. Memorial service and celebration of Bonnie’s life will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, June 20 at All Faiths Funeral Home. 

Dorothea Mae Kruger

Dorothea Mae Kruger, 90, of Fern, passed away on June 16, 2019, at Parker Place Retirement Community in Parkersburg of natural causes. Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 20, from 4-7 PM at Engelkes-Chapel in Grundy Center. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, June 21, at 10:30 AM at Colfax Presbyterian Church in rural Holland. Visitation will resume from the evening prior at 9:30 AM at the church. 

Richard Waugh

Richard Eduard Waugh, 80, of Conrad passed away on June 13, 2019, at Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center. Memorial visitation will be held on Friday, June 21 from 12:00 p.m. until time of Masonic service 2:00 p.m. at Abels Funeral and Cremation Service, Engelkes Chapel in Grundy Center, conducted by the Marshall Lodge 108 AF & AM. 

Faust is awarded Bachelor’s Degree from Caldwell University

Stephanie Faust of Grundy Center was posthumously awarded a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from Caldwell University in Caldwell, New Jersey, this spring.
 
Stephanie graduated from Grundy Center High School in 2015 and went on to attend Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, where she played soccer and earned an Associate of Arts degree in General Studies.
 

Francis "Pete" Peterson

Having lived a long, friendly, and giving life, Francis “Pete” August Peterson passed away June 10, 2019, at Trinity Center at Luther Park in Des Moines. The family will be holding a celebration of life later in the summer. His ashes will be interred at Iowa Veteran’s Cemetery in Van Meter, IA and scattered back home in northern Michigan. 

BCLUW softball defeats Grundy Center 1-0 (PHOTOS)

GRUNDY CENTER – Megan Yantis doesn't want the BCLUW softball team to get caught flat-footed on a day where one run might not be enough.
  
As it turned out, the Comets head coach admitted a win was a win as BCLUW claimed a 1-0 victory against Grundy Center, the second-consecutive game where the Comets, ranked fifth in Class 1A, had won an NICL West matchup with a single run after Monday's 1-0 win at home against West Marshall.

GRUNDY CENTER – The opportunity would be there for Grundy Center baseball, Pat Brown figured.
  
The Spartan head coach knows the extra workload his baseball players have taken on, and how that would eventually translate into a late-game offensive surge, scoring seven runs in the sixth inning to put Wednesday's NICL West matchup with BCLUW out of reach, 9-1, at the George Wilhelm Sports Complex.
